May 2026 is a special month because it highlights two important health movements: Mental Health Awareness Month and National Walking Month. While these campaigns focus on different areas of wellness, they share one powerful message — taking care of both your mind and body can help create “More Good Days, Together.”

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month theme, “More Good Days, Together,” encourages people to support one another, build stronger connections, reduce stigma, and focus on self-care practices that improve emotional wellness.

At the same time, National Walking Month reminds people of the simple but powerful health benefits of daily walking. These two ideas come together through Walk-N-Talk™ Therapy — an innovative counseling approach that combines mental health support with physical movement.

What Is Walk-N-Talk™ Therapy?

Walk-N-Talk™ Therapy is an alternative form of counseling that takes place outside of a traditional office setting. Instead of sitting across from a therapist in an office, clients walk alongside their therapist in safe and peaceful outdoor environments throughout the city of

Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.

Sessions may take place along:

  • Lake Michigan walking trails

  • Chicago Forest Preserve paths

  • Outdoor running tracks

  • City parks

  • Quiet downtown walking areas near the Chicago River

These locations are carefully selected for safety, privacy, comfort, and a calming therapeutic atmosphere.

Why Walking Helps Mental Health

Walking is one of the easiest and healthiest forms of exercise. During National Walking Month, health organizations encourage people to walk at least 20–30 minutes each day because of the many physical and emotional benefits.

Research and client experiences both show that walking can:

  • Lower stress and anxiety

  • Improve mood

  • Increase focus and clarity

  • Release feel-good chemicals called endorphins

  • Support heart health and blood pressure

  • Strengthen muscles and bones

Many clients who participate in Walk-N-Talk™ Therapy report feeling calmer, more relaxed, and emotionally lighter after sessions. Some people also find it easier to open up while walking side-by-side instead of sitting face-to-face in an office.

Creating “More Good Days, Together”

The 2026 Mental Health Awareness Month theme reminds us that healing does not have to happen alone. Support systems, healthy habits, and meaningful conversations all play an important role in emotional wellness.

Walk-N-Talk™ Therapy reflects this message by encouraging movement, connection, and open communication in a natural environment. It combines physical activity with emotional support, helping clients work through challenges while improving their overall well-being.

This approach can help individuals facing:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • ADHD

  • PTSD and trauma

  • Grief and loss

  • Anger management concerns

  • Academic and social stress

  • Chemical dependency

A Step Toward Better Mental Health

As people across the country recognize Mental Health Awareness Month and National Walking Month this May, it is important to remember that small steps can lead to meaningful change.

Whether it is checking in on a friend, taking a daily walk, or reaching out for counseling support, every positive action matters.

Walk-N-Talk™ Therapy, continues to promote healthier minds, healthier bodies, and stronger communities — one step at a time.

Walking can be therapeutic, but walking with a trained therapist can be life-changing. I founded Walk-N-Talk Therapy™ in 2003 as a fresh way to keep my high school clients engaged in their counseling sessions. Since then, the initiative and similar movements have grown to be embraced around the world, offering a promising new way for people to traverse the twists and turns of their mental wellness journey.
